Confused on what you need to do to earn a varsity letter? Read the criteria below:
Lettering criteria
• Standard 1: Attendance is required at all practices, unless you have a legitimate, written excuse.
• Standard 2: Athletes must demonstrate a good work ethic, positive attitude, and good sportsmanship. Remember, you are representing yourself, your family, your team, and your school; you should do so by behaving in a socially acceptable manner.
Standard 3: Participate in at least 6 varsity meets and finish the season in good standing (including being eligible from an academic and attendance standpoint).
• Standard 4: Athletes must accumulate at least 45 points to letter by earning (or losing) points as follows:
- Placing at a meet:
o Top ten overall = 1 point
o Top five overall = 2 points
o Top three overall = 3 points
- Compete in Minor meet (5 teams or less) = 1 point
- Compete in Major meet (6 teams or more) = 2 point
- Spring break practice at least 4 days = 1 point (total)
- State Qualifier = 5 points
o Getting on the podium at State (top nine) is an automatic letter
- Being a good teammate = 2 point
o Examples: setting up camp, taking down team camp, cheering on others, staying for whole meet not at camp, holding blocks, holding teammates clothing while running their event, batons returned to proper person, etc.
- Practice attendance 1 week=1 pt
- Practice effort/attitude 1 week = 1pt
- Points deduction = -1 point for each of the following actions
o Rule violation, unsportmanship-like conduct, tardiness/unexcused absences, loss of attire/equipment, forgetting to bring attire/equipment & grades (eligibility issues)
NOTE: If an athlete meets all standards, a varsity letter is earned. If an athlete meets 3 of the 4 standards, then lettering will be determined by coaches’ discretion. Track and field managers need to meet Standards 1-3 to be considered for lettering.
